Film Review: Borg vs McEnroe

With little interest in tennis, I found this film surprising captivating. The characters were great, and there was a real sense of tension during the tennis rallies. As ever with this type of biopic , you are left wondering how much is true and how much is the film maker's invention. With both the depicted players still living, then I hope it was the former.

Volunteer: Andy Parsons

Primarily a monologue from Andy Parsons about all things political. On occasion he would go off script and this was where the best laughs were found.

Volunteer: Matt Richardson

Matt put on an intimate show in the MET theater in front of a small audience.

The support act (who delayed the show by turning up 15 minutes late) was a bit weak however Matt's material was a lot stronger and he deserves a larger crowd.

Film Review: My Pure Land

Low budget, intimate portrayal of women, and their fight for inheritance equality, in Pakistan.

The cameraman follows the action closely, in a pseudo-documentary way, which allows you to really feel the tension and action from the people living out the situation.

As real life when every bullet can hurt, this treats life as precise and there's no place for Hollywood heroics.

Great emotional response at various points but crazy story which has elements which make no sense and are never explained.

Film Review: Victoria and Abdul

Great period drama about the friendship between an Indian and Queen Victoria. As ever, Judi plays a great Queen while Ali Fazal's innocent Indian who is taken far from home is quite freshing.

Volunteer: NCS Graduation #2

Second show of the day and its a bit of a struggle to battle through the boredom. It doesn't surprise me that they had problems getting enough volunteers for this one.

Volunteer: NCS Graduation #1

First of 3 shows today (how did that happen????). This was was arguably the most important since it saw my daughter graduate from National Citizen Service program.

Pretty low key affair based around lots of "young people" coming onto the stage to pick up their certificate, mixed in with some video of what they did in Staffordshire this summer.

Film Review: Wind River

Good film about the investigation of a woman's murder within an Indian Reservation. Touches on some cultural issues including self harm and policing challenges. All the actors put in a great performance and some twists in the story keep it fresh.

Film Review: Patti Cake$

Cool movie about a white female rapper trying to get out of poverty. Some great acting by Danielle Macdonald (Patti) but the story is nothing new.

Film Review: Volta

Polish film which although entertaining is really for the small screen rather than the cinema. Twists in the plot are quite well played out but some weak editing/film making makes some scenes judder along.
